When young pastor and 24-7 Prayer leader Alain Emerson lost his twenty-three-year-old wife to cancer, his once firm faith seemed to crumble. In this profound exploration of loss, Alain retraces his journey through the stages of grief, choosing to lean into the pain and to face God with his disappointment. He emerges with a stronger and deeper faith, and a sense of having seen God’s face – the one who ultimately restores our joy.

More About the Author

Light to the Nations, Uganda

In 2006 Alain, along with his late wife Lindsay, travelled to the remote village of Jandira in Uganda with a team from Emmanuel Church to visit and support the ‘Source of Light’ primary school. This primary school wasn’t able to compete academically and even physically against other primary schools in the region, as pupils didn’t have access to the necessary books and resources, and many were suffering from malnutrition. It was there that Alain and Lindsay caught God’s vision for the future of the school and the district, a vision that would shape their own future, even after the sudden loss of Lindsay. Two years later, in July 2008, Alain led another team of 80 volunteers from Emmanuel to build a secondary school in Jandira in Lindsay’s memory. ‘Light to the Nations’ school was built to provide many children with a chance of secondary education who couldn’t normally access this, mainly because they couldn’t afford it or most other secondary schools were situated in the city over an hours drive from Jandira. Its vision was to see young leaders of Uganda and Africa raised up through this school in an environment with a strong Christian ethos, as well as to enhance the community development of the Jandira area, turning it into a place of sustainability and economic stability. The school opened in January 2009 with 50 students and has now grown to 250 students with hopes in the next couple of years for this to grow to over 400. To date almost 1000 students have been provided with a secondary education and passed through the school.
